Oscar Night fashion special

And the winner is....
By Tommy McEwan, Glasgow Fort’s fashion expert

So you have your acceptance speech and tissues ready, now you just have to figure out what you are going to wear for your big moment on the red carpet.

The Oscars have always been the most glamorous fashion show on earth, when Hollywood’s finest parade in some of the most extravagant designer gowns and glittering jewels.

Predictions point to the influence of old Hollywood glamour for this year’s Oscar ceremony, which is to take place on 22nd February. Charcoal grey, platinum and white gowns are to take centre stage, along with minimalist diamond accessories, recalling the glamour and understated elegance of old Hollywood stars like Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn.

Oasis has a great selection of pieces recalling the glamour of the 50’s and 60’s, such as the fan structured grey dress for £70. They also have a black Zahara shift dress for £65, which has similarities to a dress worn by Kate Winslet to the BAFTAs recently. Wear with simple accessories and your hair in a stylish up-to for a look that is effortless yet very stylish.

Principles has a 2-in-1 grey and white dress for £75 follows the 1960s trend and is simple yet glam enough to take you from business meetings to cocktail hour.

Next has wonderful cream textured dress for £45, which will look great, teamed with high heels (such as Faith’s £60 diamond shoes). Add a sparkly accessory such as River Island’s Diamond Heart necklace for £7.82 and you are guaranteed to look and feel like a Hollywood starlet.

For an award-worthy beauty bag, head to Boots at Glasgow Fort. Follow celebrities’ lead with a flawless, sparkling complexion and an emphasis on the eyes – products to try including Revlon Luxurious Lengths mascara for £8.31 and Maybelline’s Pure mineral foundation, £9.78. Top your look off with Nails Inc nail polish in Brook Street shade and you’re ready to go!

Fringe Benefits

By the award-winning Tommy McEwan, Glasgow Fort fashion expert

It’s still January, and there might only be patches of sunshine to brighten your day, but let your mind drift off to daydream of the spring and what is to be one of the season’s hottest trends – fringed bags.

A big hit in the 1970’s, and now seen hanging off the arms of everyone from Kate Moss and Sienna Miller to Eva Longoria’s Prada version, the High Street is filled with plenty of styles of this hot trend to suit all budgets.

From cross-over to satchel-style, leather to clutch, this is going  to be the must-have accessory for spring.  Carry all your winter essentials in it and wear with your warmest coat, jeans and boots, or carry not very much at all and smarten up with a black dress and high heels for a night on the town.  This is definitely one accessory for all seasons!”

Burns Night Fashion Parade!
By the award-winning Tommy McEwan, Glasgow Fort fashion expert

So you’re off to a Burns Night supper, but you may be at a loss as to what to wear. The High Street is full of ideas, so before you tuck into you haggis, neeps and tatties, give yourself a twirl at the ceilidh in some of the key looks from this winter’s collections.

Luckily, tartan made a reappearance on the catwalk last season, so add some plaid or tweed to your outfit and be patriotic. If you’re not brave enough to wear a tartan dress or jacket, add a dash of checks with a tartan corsage, bag or scarf. You can also find some tartan shoes and there are still some bargains to be found in the late January sales.

But if you don’t want to look like a groupie for the Bay City Rollers, opt for some comfortable layering, as you may warm up with all the food and dancing! A chunky knit cardigan over a roll-neck sweater and jeans should do perfectly.

Think ‘practical’ if you are going to be dancing all night, and after a few spins in Strip the Willow your feet may thank you for wearing flat shoes! There are some great buys to be found currently in pretty ballet pumps in assorted colours or low-heel court shoes should keep you on your toes all night long.
